Ruka ski resort is a great holiday resort in Finland which attracts hundreds of visitors every year. It is located in Kuusamo on 490 metres above the sea level.
The first slope in Kuusamo was opened in 1954 and named Eturinne" ("Front Slope"). Today the number of slopes totals 29 with the 20 ski lifts. Among them there are 29 groomed slopes, 5 areas for children, 13 blue runs, 14 red ones and a couple of black slopes. Most of them are illuminated and available for night skiing. Besides, Ruka has a ski jumping hill, the largest in Finland, which consists of one large hill and two smaller ones.
Gradually Ruka has turned into a diverse tourist attraction which has been used all year round. In winter it is a center for such activities as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, reindeer, husky sled rides, ice carting, ice fishing, ice climbing, etc. In summer Ruka is a wonderful place for hiking, canoeing, rafting, biking, berries and mushrooms picking.
One of the most delightful attractions for families with children in Ruka is its husky farms and husky safaris. Our professionals may tell you the story of the breed, their skills and character. Huskies really enjoy pulling the sleighs and would be extremely happy to invite you to a funny safari journey though the wintry forests in Lapland! Another animal which has been living with Finns for many centuries is reindeer. To learn more about their life and habits visit a reindeer farm and find out how important they are for people living in the northern Finland. One more option to enjoy the wilderness of the Finnish forest is snowmobile safaris. Rent a skidoo and drive it in hundreds of kilometers of prepared snow tracks.
Those who prefer more quiet activities may try winter fishing. It is super easy and good for the whole family. What is more you do not need a fishing license. Or why not try bird watching? Ruka is a highly fascinating place for bird observers, as here on birdwatching towers you may learn more about eastern and northern species as well as birds that can be seen only in Kuusamo.
If you plan to visit Ruka, choose first a suitable accommodation. You may stay either in a hotel, or cottage, or apartment, or room. In 2010 the Ruka Pedestrian Village was built. It is a unique project in Scandinavia, as it manages to combine an eco-friendly village and an underground car park for 320 vehicles. You do not need to cross the streets and mind the traffic going to the slope!
